Back-to-school portraits {Essex, VT children’s photography}

My kids LOVE to be in the studio.  Unlike most children I photograph, they are always begging me to take pictures of them!  Often I don’t because I hate to say it…it sometimes feels like work.  I am much better at capturing them with my little point and shoot during random moments of the day.  But, we went back-to-school shopping and they convinced me that it would be a great idea to do a back-to-school photo session.  I couldn’t disagree.  The girls had a blast choosing their outfits and the backgrounds to go with them.  You’ll see a lot on a new backdrop I have which is an old architectural door.  The kids love it.  Griffin didn’t last very long but the girls were still raring to go when I was ready to call it quits!  If only I could convince other children that having your picture taken can be a blast.  Here is a short video (3.5 mins) of the pictures from our session.

I’m thankful for these beautiful days

This is my own sweet Madeleine. I wish I could just follow my children around with my camera and be invisible. I’d love to capture all the little things about life that they find interesting or just capture them day dreaming thinking about nothing in particular. This was one of these moments…Madeleine is actually quite far away and she had no idea I was watching her frolick on our hillside. I just love the trees, the color of the sky and how she is just lit up with afternoon sunlight. The way she’s walking down the hill also reminds me a lot of Little House on the Prairie…so innocent and sweet.

Not your typical head shot {Vermont portrait photographer}

Every once in a while I get a request for headshots. These are usually business men or women looking for something for a work brochure or website. The other day I had the pleasure of photographing Geoffrey. He is not a business man but a tenor opera singer. A really nice guy with a great voice. It was a pleasure having him in the studio. Here are a couple to show.

A Tribute to John Hughes by Alison Byrne Fields.

I am a product of the 80’s or at least I think of myself that way.   I was a teenager during the Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science and Ferris Buellers Day Off.  I also lived in suburbia Chicago.  These movies were about ME!!!  I am so saddened by the loss of one of the Movie Greats, John Hughes.  I don’t have the words to write a tribute but came upon this blog written by Alison Byrne Fields.   I think it is a wonderful way to give tribute to a wonderful man.   Click here to read.

Home made play-dough recipe – by popular request

A few days ago I twittered that I was making blue play-dough for my children in a futile attempt to keep them occupied for more than 5 minutes.  I got an overwhelming response on twitter and facebook from others that they would like me to share the recipe.  That makes me smile since I now realize that moms feel just like me during mid-summer…enduring days of rain and humidity is tough.   I can’t actually take credit for the recipe, my son’s care-giver gave it to me after I saw how he played consistently with it week after week.  His favorite thing to do is to take match box cars and drive them straight through a mound of it.  For some reason, this gives him great pleasure!  Let it be known though that if play-dough gets stuck in the wheel well, it will dry to cement inhibiting the car from future motion.  Can you tell that I’ve had to explain this to a very sad little 3 year old?!  Without further ado, here you go…

Mix:

1 cup of flour

1/4 cup salt

3 Tbsp cream of tatar  (in the spice isle and more expensive than it should be, imo)

Mix in cooking pot ingredients below

1 cup water

3 Tbsp (or more) vegetable oil

food coloring (10 drops works great for one batch)  you can also use paint to color it with

Combine all ingredients together in pot

cook on low-medium heat stirring occasionally

remove when thick and play-dough like.

When it cools off a little give to kids to knead for awhile.

Store in plastic baggie or tupperware container.

Sit back, close your eyes and let your little ones enjoy.
